IT’S Prostate Cancer Awareness Month and the Hunter Prostate Cancer Alliance (HPCA) has a busy calendar of awareness, educational and fund-raising events to help in the fight against prostate cancer in the region.

Highlights include:

■ The Newcastle, Lake Macquarie and Hunter medical community are invited to attend a complimentary medical breakfast tomorrow at Club Macquarie in Argenton between 7am and 8.45am. Guest speakers will feature three leading specialists in prostate cancer research, treatment and recovery to help others within the medical community stay up to date with the latest on the disease.

■ The Newcastle Knights will be playing for prostate cancer on Friday at Ausgrid Stadium as they run onto the field in light blue shorts and socks for their last home game before the semi-finals. You can show your support by making a small donation in the Hunter Prostate Cancer Alliance buckets.

■ On Saturday, H-events and Hunter Prostate Cancer Alliance will host an exciting mountainbike event for professional and amateur cyclists – the Xstrata Wollombi Wild Ride. The Wild Ride is a popular annual family event on the Father’s Day weekend which attracts novice and experienced riders with three course distances: 15kilometres, 30kilometres and 60kilometres. The event starts at 8am behind Wollombi Tavern, Wollombi.

■ The Hunter Prostate Cancer Alliance, the Waratahs Rugby Club and Drayton’s Family Wines will toast prostate cancer awareness with a Wine and Fine Food Appreciation Night on Saturday, September 24, at 6.30pm at The Waratahs Rugby Club in Waratah. Five courses of fine food will be matched to Drayton’s wines with an explanation from Drayton’s on how to match your ‘‘drop’’ to your dish.

■ The Hunter Prostate Cancer Alliance is also teaming with Stockland Glendale Shopping Centre, The Good Guys Warners Bay and various Lions clubs to help get the message out about regular prostate-cancer testing.

The Hunter Prostate Cancer Alliance provides a free information and counselling service for sufferers and survivors of the disease in the Hunter area.

The alliance is unique because it is the only organisation that offers a free counselling service to men and their families who are affected by prostate cancer.

Each year the Hunter Prostate Cancer Alliance continues to advance its mission of increasing community awareness, promoting early detection and providing support to local men and their families.

Through their initiatives, many lives are changed for the better.

MESSAGE: Education is an important tool in fighting prostate cancer.
