University Students Tackle Prostate Cancer
Friday 9th
September saw
university rivals come together all in the name of a good cause. The
‘International House’ of the University of Newcastle took on their rivals
‘Edwards Hall’ in a battle on the field, raising funds in support of the Hunter
Prostate Cancer Alliance (HPCA).
The HPCA is a non-profit organisation which aims to increase
awareness of prostate cancer and encourage early detection across the Hunter
region. Statistics show the incidence of prostate cancer is alarmingly high and
fundraisers such as this help create further exposure and awareness amongst our
local community.
The students hosted a ‘Blue’ match for Prostate Cancer
Awareness Month this September. The charity event raised over $500, with all
donations going to the HPCA.
Samuel Rowlings led the event with the girls taking to the
field for a game of touch, while the boys played league. The final match of the
day saw the two student houses competing for the winning title.
Rowlings, approached the HPCA on behalf of the university
student houses who support a local charity each year with fund raising raffles
and sporting events.
The HPCA is grateful for the support from the students, and
the opportunity to raise early awareness amongst younger generations.
Executive Marketing Manager of the HPCA, Leigh Maughan, said “We are delighted to receive
support from our younger generations who may have a father, grandfather, uncle
or friend who has suffered or is suffering from prostate cancer.”
“It not only allows us the opportunity to create further awareness
amongst men in the Hunter but also to reach a younger audience” said Mr
Maughan.
The HPCA offers a free counselling and information service
for cancer sufferers and their families, with qualified support staff on hand
at the local Waratah office.
