The Hunter Prostate Cancer Alliance will be given $450,000 over the next three years to establish a counselling service specifically catering for men and prostate cancer. This is, once again, a Newcastle first and the counselling service offered at the HPCA Centre will be unique.
The Member for Newcastle, Jodi McKay, said the group will receive $150,000 per year for three years to employ specialist counsellors to work with men diagnosed with prostate cancer and their families.
The incidence of prostate cancer in the Hunter region is on the rise largely because of increased awareness of the disease through the PSA's "little prick" campaign. As a result improved support services must be in place to assist those men who are being treated for prostate cancer or have been treated and need extra support for treatment symptoms.
